Crime in the United States, by Region, Geographic Division, and State, 2015–2016

  • In 2016, the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States increased 4.0 percent when compared with 2015 data.
  • When comparing the 2-year estimates, violent crimes increased in three of the four regions, with the largest increase (6.3 percent) occurring in the West, followed by an increase of 5.9 percent in the Midwest, and 3.5 percent in the South. Violent crime decreased 1.2 percent in the Northeast.
  • The estimated number of murders increased 13.5 percent in the Midwest, 9.1 percent in the South, and 8.0 percent in the West, but decreased 0.6 percent in the Northeast.
  • For rape (revised definition), the West had a 5.3 percent increase, the South had a 4.2 percent increase, the Midwest experienced a 1.9 percent increase, and the Northeast saw a 1.4 percent increase.
  • The estimated number of robbery offenses in 2016 rose 4.5 percent in the West, 2.9 percent in the Midwest, and 1.3 percent in the South. Robbery decreased 5.6 percent in the Northeast.
  • Estimated aggravated assault offenses were up 7.8 percent in the Midwest, 7.2 percent in the West, 4.2 percent in the South, and 0.7 percent in the Northeast.
  • For 2016, the estimated number of property crimes nationwide decreased 1.3 percent when compared with the 2015 estimate.
  • The estimated number of property crimes declined 4.4 percent in the Northeast, 1.5 percent in the South, 0.7 percent in the Midwest, and 0.1 percent in the West.
  • The estimated number of burglaries decreased 9.6 percent in the Northeast, 4.7 percent in the South, 3.9 percent in the West, and 2.4 percent in the Midwest.
  • Larceny-thefts declined 3.7 percent in the Northeast, 1.3 percent in the South, and 1.2 percent in the Midwest, and 0.9 in the West.
  • When compared with the 2015 estimates, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts in 2016 increased 9.3 percent in the West, 8.1 percent in the Midwest, 6.2 percent in the South, and 0.9 percent in the Northeast.
