- In 2016, the estimated number of violent crime offenses was 1,248,185, an increase of 4.1 percent from the 2015 estimate.
- The violent crime of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter increased 8.6 percent in 2016 when compared with the 2015 estimate. Aggravated assault offenses increased 5.1 percent, and rape offenses (legacy definition) increased 4.9 percent. The violent crime of robbery rose 1.2 percent when compared with the 2015 estimate.
- The 2016 violent crime rate was 386.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, up 3.4 percent when compared with the 2015 violent crime rate.
- The murder rate was 5.3 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2016, a 7.9 percent increase when compared with the estimated rate for the previous year.
- The estimated number of property crimes in 2016 was 7,919,035, a 1.3 percent decrease from the 2015 estimate.
- Of the property crimes, the estimated number of burglary offenses decreased 4.6 percent, and larceny-theft offenses declined 1.5 percent. The estimated number of motor vehicle thefts increased 7.4 percent.
- The 2016 property crime rate was 2,450.7 per 100,000, a 2.0 percent decrease when compared with the 2015 rate.
