Current Year Over Previous Year Arrest Trends, by Sex, 2016-2017

  • Nationwide, the number of males arrested in 2017 decreased 1.0 percent when compared with the number of those arrested in 2016. The number of females arrested decreased 0.5 percent during this 2-year period.
  • The number of juvenile (persons under age 18) males arrested in 2017 decreased 3.8 percent when compared with 2016 juvenile male arrest data. The number of juvenile female arrests decreased 5.9 percent.
  • The 2-year trend showed that the number of males arrested for violent crimes increased 0.6 percent, and the number of females arrested for violent crimes rose 1.6 percent.
  • Arrests of juvenile males for violent crimes rose 0.6 percent; arrests of juvenile females increased 1.9 percent.
  • In a comparison of 2016 and 2017 arrest data, male arrests for murder offenses increased 2.3 percent for males of all ages. The number of juvenile male arrests for murder rose 5.1 percent.
  • Arrests of juvenile females increased 3.3 percent for aggravated assault but decreased in all other violent crime offense categories. Juvenile female arrests fell the most for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, down 15.3 percent.
  • The number of males arrested for property crimes in 2017 decreased 5.0 percent when compared with 2016 arrest data, and the number of females arrested for property crimes decreased 9.6 percent.
  • The number of juvenile males arrested for property crimes decreased 3.5 percent; the number of juvenile females decreased 15.6 percent.
  • A comparison of 2017 and 2016 arrest data for property crime offenses indicated that motor vehicle theft arrests increased 4.8 percent for males of all ages, 3.6 percent for male juveniles, 8.1 percent for females of all ages, and 3.9 percent for female juveniles.
