In 2010, 208 officers from the DOJ were assaulted, and of these officers, 73 were injured. The following provides information by agency within the DOJ:

  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—24 officers were assaulted, 3 of whom were injured. 
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation—14 officers were assaulted; 7 were injured. 
  • U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration—5 officers were assaulted; 4 were injured. 
  • U.S. Marshals Service—165 officers were assaulted; 5 were injured with firearms, and 54 were injured with other types of dangerous weapons. 

Type of activity

Officers from the DOJ were performing the following activities at the time they were attacked:

  • 92 officers were making arrests or serving summonses. 
  • 34 officers were on court duty. 
  • 22 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners. 
  • 22 officers were on patrol or guard duty. 
  • 18 officers were conducting investigations or searches. 
  • 3 officers were on protection duty. 
  • 2 officers were assigned to office duty. 
  • 15 officers were assigned to other duties. 

Weapons

Weapons that were used in the attacks against the DOJ officers include the following:

  • 52 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet. 
  • 28 officers were attacked with firearms. 
  • 8 officers were attacked with vehicles. 
  • 1 officer was attacked with a knife or other cutting instrument. 
  • 119 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons. 

Dispositional information

In the attacks on the DOJ officers, law enforcement authorities identified 363 suspects. Dispositional information was available for 27 of these suspects at the time of this report:

  • 9 suspects were found guilty. 
  • 6 suspects were awaiting trial. 
  • 5 suspects are deceased. 
  • 5 suspects were fugitives. 
  • 1 suspect was found incompetent to stand trial. 
  • Prosecution was declined for 1 suspect.
