Within the DOI in 2010, 650 officers were assaulted. Of these officers, 130 sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DOI:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs–544 officers were assaulted, and 114 of these officers were injured. 
  • Bureau of Land Management–4 officers were assaulted, but none of these officers were injured. 
  • National Park Service–98 officers were assaulted, and 14 of these officers were injured. 
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service–4 officers were assaulted, and 2 of these officers were injured. 

Type of activity

At the time of their attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:

  • 407 officers were making arrests or serving summonses. 
  • 114 officers were on patrol or guard duty. 
  • 46 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners. 
  • 40 officers were conducting investigations or searches. 
  • 9 officers were assigned to protection duty. 
  • 1 officer was assigned to office duty. 
  • 33 officers were performing other official duties. 


Weapons that were used against the DOI officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 321 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet. 
  • 27 officers were attacked with vehicles. 
  • 20 officers were attacked with firearms. 
  • 12 officers were attacked with blunt instruments. 
  • 11 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments. 
  • 259 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons. 

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 595 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers. At the time of this report, dispositional information was available for 281 suspects:

  • 131 offenders were found guilty. 
  • 64 suspects were awaiting trial. 
  • Prosecution was declined for 36 suspects. 
  • Prosecutive opinion was pending for 31 suspects. 
  • 7 suspects were fugitives. 
  • 6 offenders were found incompetent to stand trial. 
  • 5 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed. 
  • 1 offender is deceased.
