Criteria: Which officers are in this report?
The data in Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) pertain to felonious deaths, accidental deaths, and assaults of duly sworn city, university and college, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement officers who, at the time of the incident, met the following criteria:
- They were working in an official capacity.
- They had full arrest powers.
- They ordinarily wore a badge and carried a firearm.
- They were paid from governmental funds set aside specifically for payment of sworn law enforcement representatives.
Officers who died are included if their deaths are directly related to injuries received during the incidents.
Trend data from the past 10 years do not include the officers who died as a result of the events of September 11, 2001. Combining these data with the statistics traditionally included in the annual LEOKA reports would create an outlier effect, skewing measurements and analyses of LEOKA data. However, a special report concerning the law enforcement officers who died as a result of the terrorist attacks is included in the 2001 edition of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted.
