At the time they were attacked, 3 of the officers from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service were conducting investigations or searches, 2 of the officers were making arrests or serving summonses, and 2 of the officers were assigned to other duties.

Weapons

All 7 officers were attacked with weapons other than firearms, knives or other cutting instruments, vehicles, bombs, blunt instruments, or personal weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 5 offenders in the attacks on U.S. Postal Inspection Service officers. The following dispositional information was available for all of the suspects at the time of this report:

• 2 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.

• 1 suspect’s prosecution was declined.

• 1 suspect was found guilty.

• 1 suspect’s case was pending prosecutive opinion.
