In 2014, 257 officers from the DOJ were attacked, and of these officers, 46 were injured. The following provides information by agency within the DOJ:

  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—10 officers were assaulted, 2 of whom were injured with firearms, and 3 sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms.
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation—11 officers were assaulted, 2 of whom were injured with firearms, and 1 with weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration—6 officers were attacked, none of whom were injured.
  • U.S. Marshals Service—230 officers were assaulted, 5 of whom were injured with firearms, and 33 sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms.

Type of activity

Officers from the DOJ were performing the following activities when they were attacked:

  • 192 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 19 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 18 officers were on court duty.
  • 10 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 10 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 1 officer was assigned to office duty.
  • 7 officers were assigned to other duties.

Weapons

Weapons used in the attacks against the 257 DOJ officers include the following:

  • 132 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 47 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 28 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 21 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 4 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 25 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 178 suspects in connection with the attacks on the DOJ officers. The following dispositional information was available for 16 of these suspects at the time of this report:

  • 10 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 2 suspects were deceased.
  • 2 suspects were fugitives.
  • 1 suspect’s prosecution was declined.
  • 1 suspect was found guilty.
