There were 535 officers with the DHS who were attacked in 2014. The extent of injuries was not reported for 373 of these victim officers. Of the 162 officers for whom the extent of injury was reported, 39 officers sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DHS:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection–500 officers were attacked; however, the extent of injuries was not reported for 373 of these victim officers. Of the 127 officers for whom the extent of injuries was reported, 18 were injured, all with weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Secret Service–27 officers were assaulted. Fourteen were injured, all with weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement–8 officers were assaulted. Seven were injured, all with weapons other than firearms.

Type of activity

At the time they were attacked, DHS officers were performing the following activities:

  • 114 officers were conducting investigations/searches.
  • 26 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty.
  • 12 officers were assigned to protection duty.
  • 6 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 2 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 2 officers were assigned to other duties.

Weapons

Weapons used against the DHS officers during the attacks include:

  • 288 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 131 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 65 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 17 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 1 officer was attacked with a knife or other cutting instrument.
  • 33 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 111 suspects in the assaults on DHS officers. Dispositional information was reported for 31 of the known offenders. At the time of this report:

  • 16 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 7 suspects were found guilty.
  • 5 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
  • 1 suspect was found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.
  • 1 suspect’s case was pending prosecutive opinion.
  • 1 suspect was a fugitive.
