Within the DOI in 2013, 875 officers were attacked. Of these officers, 1 officer was killed with a firearm, 4 were injured with firearms, and 102 sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms. The following provides information by agency within the DOI:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs–806 officers were attacked, 1 of whom was killed with a firearm, 4 of whom were injured with firearms, and 90 of whom were injured with weapons other than firearms.
  • Bureau of Land Management–5 officers were assaulted; none were injured.
  • National Park Service–59 officers were assaulted, 12 of whom sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service–5 officers were assaulted; none were injured.

Type of activity

At the time of the attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:

  • 392 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 300 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 102 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 60 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 4 officers were assigned to protection duty.
  • 2 officers were assigned to office duty.
  • 15 officers were performing other official duties.

Weapons

Weapons used against the DOI officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 194 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 35 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 13 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 11 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 6 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 616 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 842 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers. At the time of this report, the following dispositional information was available for 701 of the suspects:

  • 504 suspects were found guilty.
  • 151 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 20 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
  • 16 suspects’ cases were pending prosecutive opinion.
  • 4 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.
  • 4 suspects were found incompetent to stand trial.
  • 2 suspects were fugitives.
