U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
In 2012, 329 officers from the DOJ were assaulted, and of these officers, 32 were injured. The following provides information by agency within the DOJ:
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—20 officers were assaulted; none were injured.
- Federal Bureau of Investigation—24 officers were assaulted, 2 of whom were injured.
- U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration—no officers were assaulted.
- U.S. Marshals Service—285 officers were assaulted; of these officers, 30 were injured.
Type of activity
Officers from the DOJ were performing the following activities at the times they were attacked:
- 239 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
- 27 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
- 23 officers were on court duty.
- 22 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
- 4 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
- 1 officer was on protection duty.
- 13 officers were assigned to other duties.
Weapons
Weapons used in the attacks against the 329 DOJ officers include the following:
- 198 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
- 58 officers were attacked with firearms.
- 22 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
- 19 officers were attacked with vehicles.
- 4 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
- 28 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.
Dispositional information
Law enforcement authorities identified 331 suspects in connection with the attacks on the DOJ officers. Dispositional information was available for 25 of these suspects at the time of this report:
- 13 suspects were awaiting trial.
- 4 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
- 3 suspects’ cases were pending prosecutive opinion.
- 3 suspects were found guilty.
- 2 suspects are deceased.
