In 2011, 289 officers from the DOJ were assaulted, and of these officers, 41 were injured and 2 died as a result of the attacks.  The following provides information by agency within the DOJ:

  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—24 officers were assaulted; 2 of whom were injured.
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation—29 officers were assaulted; 7 of whom were injured.
  • U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration—no officers were assaulted.
  • U.S. Marshals Service—236 officers were assaulted; of these officers, 32 were injured and 2 were feloniously killed.

Type of activity

Officers from the DOJ were performing the following activities at the time they were attacked:

  • 191 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 28 officers were on court duty.
  • 28 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 21 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 13 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 4 officers were assigned to other duties.
  • 3 officers were assigned to office duty.
  • 1 officer was on protection duty.

Weapons

Weapons that were used in the attacks against the 289 DOJ officers include the following:

  • 210 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 42 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 27 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 6 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 2 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 2 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.

Dispositional information

In the attacks on the DOJ officers, law enforcement authorities identified 361 suspects.  Dispositional information was available for 20 of these suspects at the time of this report:

  • 13 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 4 suspects were found guilty.
  • 2 suspects are deceased.
  • Prosecutive opinion was pending for 1 suspect.
