There were 836 officers with the DHS who were assaulted in 2011.  Of these officers, 1 officer was killed, and 90 officers sustained injuries.  The following provides information by agency within the DHS:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection–802 officers were assaulted; 1 of whom was injured during an assault with a firearm, and 81 of whom suffered injuries inflicted by weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement–5 officers were assaulted. Of these 5 officers, 1 was killed with a firearm, 1 was injured with a firearm, and 3 were injured with personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.).
  • U.S. Secret Service–29 officers were assaulted; of these, 4 were injured with a weapon other than a firearm.

Type of activity

At the time they were attacked, officers from the DHS were performing the following activities:

  • 695 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty.
  • 100 were conducting investigations/searches.
  • 4 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 3 were assigned to office duty.
  • 2 were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 1 was assigned to court duty and 1 was assigned to protection duty.
  • 30 officers were assigned to other duties at the times of the attacks.

Weapons

Weapons that were used against the 836 DHS officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 260 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 52 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 32 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 15 officers were involved in bomb-related incidents.
  • 11 of the officers suffered attacks with blunt instruments.
  • 3 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 463 of the officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 246 suspects in the assaults on DHS officers.  Dispositional information was reported for 70 of the 246 known offenders. At the time of this report:

  • 24 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 3 suspects pleaded or were found guilty of the charges.
  • 43 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
