Figure 3: Organization of mtDNA

The mtDNA genome is approximately 16,569 bases in length and is divided into two sections: coding and noncoding. The noncoding region is also called the control region and contains two highly polymorphic regions called Hypervariable Regions I and II (shown in red and yellow in the diagram). Each of these hypervariable regions is approximately 300 bp in length. The FBI Laboratory sequences both of these regions in a forensic case.
