Boles

John Boles – Assistant Director, International Operations Division

Throughout the course of his FBI career, John Boles has worked a wide variety of investigative matters, including organized crime/drugs, violent crime, counterterrorism, white collar crime, and cyber crime.

Mr. Boles entered on duty with the FBI in 1995 and was assigned to the Sacramento Division. There, he investigated most criminal violations, including fugitives, white-collar, cyber, violent crimes, narcotics, terrorism, and crimes against children. In 1997, he was selected as the Sniper team leader. While assigned to Sacramento, Mr. Boles successfully investigated the Tri-West Investment Club, an Internet Ponzi scheme that defrauded 15,000 victims in 57 countries.

In 2003, Mr. Boles was selected as assistant legal attaché to Kiev, Ukraine, and was promoted to legal attaché later that year. Mr. Boles was responsible for all FBI programs in Ukraine and Belarus. While assigned in Kiev, Mr. Boles successfully facilitated the first extradition from Ukraine to the United States.

In 2006, he transferred to St. Louis and was promoted to supervisory special agent. He supervised the Joint Terrorism Task Force, made up of 12 member agencies, and the International Terrorism squad. Mr. Boles directed an undercover operation targeting identified fundraisers in support of terrorism that resulted in RICO charges on 14 individuals. He was also selected to serve as SWAT Coordinator, responsible for operation and training of the Division SWAT team.

Mr. Boles was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the San Diego Division in 2009. In that role, he oversaw six investigative squads over cyber and white-collar crime matters, as well as directing the administrative program for the office.

In 2010, Mr. Boles was promoted and served as the special assistant to the executive assistant director, National Security Branch. He served in that capacity until 2011, when he was selected as special agent in charge of the Norfolk FBI Office.

In 2012, Mr. Boles returned to FBI Headquarters as deputy assistant director, Cyber Division, where he oversaw FBI cyber operations and investigations.

On May 22, 2014, Director Comey promoted Mr. Boles as the assistant director, International Operations Division after serving in the acting role. In this role, he has oversight of FBI personnel and operations at FBI Headquarters and 85 overseas locations.

Prior to his FBI career, he served as a cryptologic technician aboard surface and subsurface combatants in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Boles graduated from the University of Georgia.
