Crime in the United States, by Region, Geographic Division, and State, 2018–2019

  • In 2019, the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States decreased 0.6 percent when compared with 2018 data.
  • When comparing the 2-year estimates, violent crimes decreased in three of the four regions, with the largest decrease (2.1 percent) occurring in the West, followed by a decrease of 1.1 percent in the Midwest, and a decline of 0.4 percent in the Northeast. Violent crime increased in the South by 0.7 percent.
  • The estimated number of murders decreased 5.6 percent in the Midwest, 4.8 percent in the Northeast, and 2.3 percent in the West. However, the estimated number of murders increased 5.6 percent in the South.
  • The number of rapes (revised definition) decreased 5.2 percent in the West, 3.2 percent in the Midwest, 2.0 percent in the Northeast, and 0.9 percent in the South.
  • The estimated number of robbery offenses in 2019 fell 7.9 percent in the Midwest, 4.7 percent in the West, 4.1 percent in the Northeast, and 3.5 percent in the South.
  • Estimated aggravated assault offenses increased 2.1 percent in the South, 1.7 percent in the Midwest, and 1.4 percent in the Northeast, but declined 0.5 percent in the West.
  • For 2019, the estimated number of property crimes nationwide decreased 4.1 percent when compared with the 2018 estimate.
  • The estimated number of property crimes declined 6.2 percent in the Northeast, 4.8 percent in the Midwest, 4.7 percent in the West, and 2.7 percent in the South.
  • The estimated number of burglaries decreased 13.5 percent in the Northeast, 10.3 percent in the Midwest, 9.4 percent in the West, and 8.4 percent in the South.
  • Larceny-thefts declined 4.9 percent in the Northeast, 3.9 percent in the Midwest, 2.7 percent in the West, and 1.7 percent in the South.
  • When compared with the 2018 estimates, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts in 2019 decreased 8.7 percent in the West, 6.9 percent in the Northeast, and 2.1 percent in the Midwest. However, motor vehicle thefts rose 0.5 percent in the South.
