Ten-Year Arrest Trends, by Sex, 2008–2017

  • In 2017, the number of males arrested declined 25.1 percent when compared with data for 2008; the number of females arrested fell 14.2 percent for the same comparison period.
  • Arrests of juvenile (persons under age 18) males dropped 58.3 percent, and arrests of juvenile females decreased 57.5 percent when data for 2017 were compared with statistics for 2008.
  • The number of males arrested for violent crimes in 2017 decreased 14.0 percent from the number arrested in 2008. The number of females arrested for violent crimes decreased 1.7 percent.
  • Arrests of juveniles for violent crimes declined for both genders in 2017 when compared with data for 2008. The number of arrests of juvenile males decreased 45.6 percent, and the number of arrests of juvenile females dropped 39.9 percent.
  • The number of males arrested for property crimes in 2017 declined 25.3 percent from the number arrested in 2008, and the number of females arrested for property crimes fell 22.4 percent.
  • Arrests of juvenile males and juvenile females for property crimes decreased 58.2 percent and 67.6 percent, respectively, when data for 2017 were compared with data for 2008.
  • The only increases in arrests were a 14.4 percent increase in adult females for murder, a 27.6 percent increase in female arrests for motor vehicle theft, a 20.4 percent increase in female arrests for weapons, and a 31.8 percent increase in female arrests for drug abuse violations.
