Crime in the United States, by Region, Geographic Division, and State, 2014–2015

  • In 2015, the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States increased 3.8 percent when compared with 2014 data.
  • When comparing the 2-year estimates, violent crimes increased in three of the four regions, with the largest increase (7.9 percent) occurring in the West, followed by an increase of 4.1 percent in the Midwest, and 3.1 percent in the South. Violent crime decreased 0.9 percent in the Northeast.
  • The estimated number of murders increased 15.2 percent in the Midwest, 11.6 percent in the South, 8.9 percent in the West, and 4.2 percent in the Northeast.
  • For rape (revised definition), the West had a 6.6 percent increase, the Midwest saw a 4.9 percent increase, the South had a 4.7 percent increase, and the Northeast saw a 3.8 percent increase.
  • The estimated number of robbery offenses in 2015 rose 7.0 percent in the West, 1.3 percent in the Midwest, and 0.6 percent in the South. Robbery decreased 4.2 percent in the Northeast.
  • Estimated aggravated assault offenses were up 8.5 percent in the West, 4.9 percent in the Midwest, 3.7 percent in the South, and 0.1 percent in the Northeast.
  • For 2015, the estimated number of property crimes nationwide decreased 2.6 percent when compared with the 2014 estimate.
  • The estimated number of property crimes declined 6.8 percent in the Northeast, 4.5 percent in the Midwest, and 4.3 percent in the South. Property crimes increased 3.9 percent in the West.
  • The estimated number of burglaries decreased 12.9 percent in the Northeast, 8.6 percent in the South, 8.1 percent in the Midwest, and 3.9 percent in the West.
  • Larceny-thefts declined 5.7 percent in the Northeast, 3.6 percent in the South, and 3.5 percent in the Midwest. Larceny-thefts rose 5.3 percent in the West.
  • When compared with the 2014 estimates, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts in 2015 decreased 4.6 percent in the Midwest and 3.0 percent in the Northeast. Motor vehicle thefts increased 9.5 percent in the West and 1.6 percent in the South.
