Percent Change, by Population Group

The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

General comment

This table provides the percent change in offenses known to law enforcement, by population group, for the first 6 months of 2012 and 2013.

Methodology

The data used in creating this table were from law enforcement agencies submitting 3 to 6 common months of offense reports for 2012 and 2013. If the FBI determines certain variables have created unusual fluctuations in the data, those data are excluded from the tabulations.

The percent changes shown for the offense of forcible rape are based on data collected under the historical definition of rape. Because the UCR Program has received only one year of rape data based on the newly implemented definition, a two-year comparison could not be provided. The percent changes shown include converted National Incident-Based Reporting System rape data and data for those states/agencies that reported the historical definition of forcible rape for both years.

Population estimation

The FBI calculated the 2012 state growth rates using the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 decennial state/national population figures and 2012 provisional state/national population estimates. The FBI then estimated population figures for city jurisdictions by applying the 2012 state growth rate to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau data.
