Message from the Director
Today’s FBI is a national security and law enforcement organization that uses, collects, and shares intelligence in everything we do. Intelligence is simply information relevant to decision making. We are threat-based and intelligence-driven, which means that we are more thoughtful about what we work and how we do that work in order to better protect Americans from crime and terrorism.
The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is critical to decision making. In 2013, more than 18,400 agencies provided the FBI with meaningful data to help gauge the level of crime in our country. Law enforcement, government officials, and others in turn used that data to make decisions—to plan and allocate resources that help fight crime and enforce the law.
Although the threats we face and the technology we use to collect information about these threats may change, collaboration among law enforcement agencies remains the backbone of the UCR Program. No one agency can do it alone. It is to the credit of each contributing agency that UCR data remains one of America’s key indicators of crime in the nation.
